Weekly Roundup: Top 5 Career and Tech Hiring Tips -- November 21, 2014

By The CyberCoders Team - November 21st, 2014
Recruiting Industry

Welcome to CyberCoders' Weekly Roundup! Every week, we handpick the top five stories from around the web that offer great insight into hiring in the tech industry.

1. 10 Things I Wish I Knew On My First Day at Google [Medium]

Omid Sheybani recently celebrated his five year anniversary with the most watched and coveted companies to work for. He offers insight into 10 things he wishes he knew when he first arrived at the company.

Some key lessons he learned include not worrying too much about promotion titles because they aren't weighted as heavily outside of the company. Instead, focusing on adding value to the organization is a much better strategy for success.

Exceeding--not meeting--expectations is the best way to earn a promotion. Giving your 110 percent on every project and blowing expectations out of the water are the only way to get recognition at Google.

2. How Silicon Valley Startups Try to Lure Top Engineering Talent [Network World]

If you want the best candidates, you have to pay the price. For tech jobs, it's a candidate's market and the best way to lure top engineering talent is to offer competitive pay.

"I think these giant compensation packages are partly the result of second-tier companies bidding up tip-tier talent," according to the article.

3. Facebook Plans to Take on Companies Trying to be the Facebook for Work [Yahoo! Finance]

We all know that Facebook is an epic tool for your social life, but now Facebook is venturing to your work life too.

Facebook is expanding to the office. Dubbed "Facebook at Work," the site will be similar to regular Facebook, but catered for the office.

4. SnapChat's 'SnapCash' Lets You Send Money to Friends Via the App [Digital Trends]

SnapChat's joining the world of mobile payment.

“We set out to make payments faster and more fun, but we also know that security is essential when you’re dealing with money,” the startup said in its post. “Square has a ton of experience in this area and our teams have been hard at work to make Snapcash a great experience for everyone.”

5. These are the Highest Paying Programs [Life Hacker]

Quartz looked through an in-depth report from The Brookings Institution containing data on thousands of job ads filtering out programming skills. These are the highest paid skills:

1. Ruby on Rails: $109,460

2. Objective C: $108,225

3. Python: $100,17

4. JAVA: $94,908

5. C++: $93,502
